Sara’s Jam [Blackberry, Boysenberry, Strawberry & Prosecco] — part of the Friendship Series

Meet Sara; the inspiration for our February offering in the Friendship Series…

Sara Marie Calvey Schmidt…

Sara…  Another night — another theater outing… another chance encounter that led to yet another lifetime connection…

I attended a performance of ‘Company’ at the Camarillo Skyway Playhouse.  When we got to the scene where Jenny and David share pot with Bobby, the girl playing Jenny was so freaking hysterical that I couldn’t stop laughing — my eyes were wet; my pants were a little wet — I was amazed at the talent I saw on that stage.  And a little later on, she took center stage, opened her mouth, and let forth the most glorious soprano sounds while Amy struggled with whether or not to get married.  My jaw dropped as I said to myself, ‘Damn, the bitch can sing too…’  After the show was over, I marched right over to her, introduced myself, and even though I had no idea who she was, I proceeded to tell her, in very thorough detail, just how amazing I thought she was… after thoroughly embarrassing her, I walked away with a smile on my face, confident that our paths would cross again.  And just a couple of months later, they did — when I got to costume her, squeezing her into a corset for her portrayal of ‘Whore No. 1’ in Les Miserables, that I costumed for A.R.T.S.  And we’ve been besties ever since… 😀

Our birthdays are both in February — 2 days apart.  Hell… we even have the same favorite color… SO OF COURSE she had to be the February flavor!!  How to describe Sara… she is the sweetest person you could ever hope to meet, but with a sweetness that is real, genuine, and heartfelt — not cloying.  She has spunk; she’s not afraid to call you out, which is one of my favorite things about her.  You wouldn’t know it at first glance, but she is fearless… and she ALWAYS puts others before herself.  I love, love, LOVE her, and I miss her terribly.  And one of my favorite things in the world is singing with her – I just can’t get enough of her voice… it’s like magic.

When I asked Sara about her favorite fruits and flavors, I took that information, and keeping her, and my feelings for her in mind while I was playing around in the kitchen, and remembering that she already had a favorite jam that I made, I came up with this concoction — I took my Double ‘B’ Berry Preserves [her favorite], and our favorite treat when we’re hanging out together, which is Strawberries soaked in Prosecco, and did a fusion thang!  The two flavor combinations go together beautifully — I couldn’t stop eating this one!!  And each taste reminds me of my bestie… my Sara.  Sara’s Jam — here for you to try… and just in time for Valentine’s Day!!
